Get some holiday banter going with DIY Conversation “Crackers”!
This year, keep the holidays merry and bright with these clever conversation “crackers” that make it easier for families to keep the spirit alive with fun and interesting questions inside. They’re easy to make with just a few simple materials and a little creativity and perfect for a family holiday party!
Materials Needed:
- Empty toilet paper or paper towel cardboard rolls
- Cracker snaps (For that “popping” sound, you can order these online!)
- Kraft or brown wrapping paper
- Scissors
- White paint, brushes and markers
- String
- Strips of paper and fine point pen
- Tape
STEP 1
Start by decorating the kraft paper before it gets attached to the carboard rolls. You’ll want to cut pieces of it that are long enough for the roll to fit inside and twice as wide as the tube itself. Decorate the paper with festive designs using your paint and a brush; then set them aside to dry.
STEP 2
While the decorated kraft papers are drying, cut out your thin strips of paper that will go inside the tubes with a series of fun and interesting conversation starters. Use a fine-tip pen to write out questions that will get people talking—here’s a few thought starters:
- How will you celebrate this year?
- What’s your favorite holiday tradition?
- Tell us about your best holiday memory.
- What plans or resolutions do you have for the new year?
STEP 3
When the decorated kraft papers have completely dried, cut tiny perforation marks to make it easier for the cracker to break when it gets pulled. Start by laying the tube in the center of the paper and trace down both sides making a mark where the ends of the tube line up with the paper. Then fold the paper just past this line and cut triangular shapes down the side of each fold. You should end up with a row of diamond-shaped holes on either side when you unfold the paper.
STEP 4
Now it’s time to place the cracking snap inside the tube and roll it up. Once the snap is inside, place the tube at the end of your cut paper and tape it in place. Then roll the tube in the paper and tape it in place. Tie a piece of string around one end of the paper along the perforated line. Roll up or fold one of the conversation starter strips and place it inside the tube, then tie the cracker shut on the open end.
When ready, lay them out and remind your family to firmly pull each end of the tube when they’re ready to snap their cracker. Enjoy!
